Mention is often made of the threat of extinction faced by elephants, gorillas and whales. It is rare to hear of the impending extinction of giraffes and yet it is of great concern to Western Africa where a group of only 165 white giraffes remains in the south of the Niger - the last remaining West African giraffes. ‘The last giraffe’ tells the story of a family of white giraffes in the Niger and their great male, Long-Neck, faced with the local population as portrayed by Fati, a village girl. Although the giant of the bush has fallen victim to drought, the cutting-down of the acacias it feeds off, the transformation of the savannah into millet fields, it is faring better and better thanks to protective measures. But a new source of conflict has just emerged: beans. Fati plants them to feed her family, but it is a tasty tidbit for the giraffes! Will there be a war over giraffes and beans?
