Photo: Eclectic production

From the indigenous heritage of the Amerindians to Spanish colonial architecture, the islands of the Caribbean are a rich trove of historic and cutural treasure. Today, a few dedicated souls are committed to preserving this unique and endangered legacy. Giordano Sanchez Nunez is an architect in Havana working to restore one of the oldest convents in the city. It is young Cubans like him who have taken up the call to revitalize their city. Since 1995, more than 800 colonial palaces, churches and buildings have been returned to their former glory. In the Antilles, Benoît Bérard works with a group of young Martinicans to preserve the local Amerindian culture, like the traditional kanawa, the flat-bottomed canoes that first brought the Arawaks to the Lesser Antilles in 300 B.C. Benoit guides us to Dominica, Guadeloupe and Santo Domingo to discover a native culture long neglected.
