Since Vladimir Putin’s reelection to the Russian presidency, he has been projecting a disturbing image of his country – where expressing your political views could cost you your freedom, where business owners who defy the ruling oligarchy and bureaucracy are moving targets, and where 99% of legal rulings end in convictions (even more than under Stalin).
Now Russia boasts the second highest incarceration rate in the world, with over 800,000 detained – a third of whom are innocent, according to human rights groups.
