Berlusconi: Political Showman
For 20 years ltaly's political life was dramatically dominated by one of its most controversial and charismatic characters : Sylvio Berlusconi. Born in 1936 to a modest family, by thirty he had become real-estate magnate and media mogul before his rise and fall as a political leader both admired and derided for his vigorous pursuit and control of the limelight.
ln the middle of last summer, after a long trial, Berlusconi was condemned by the high court to a one-year sentence for tax fraud, to be served under house arrest or through community service because of his age (77).This will probably mark the end of his political career.
At the end of November, the Italian Senate has voted to eject Berlusconi from parliament, a move that probably will not threaten to destabilise the coalition government.
