Evolution of the Polar Bear

Media reports talk of the polar bear’s imminent extinction due to the fragmentation of an increasingly fragile and divided habitat. But if the ice were to melt completely, won’t polar bears still be bears? Won’t their intrinsic nature hold a solution? Is it possible that their ability to adapt is far stronger than we imagine? Could the white bear itself hold the secret to its salvation?
The answer is yes and can be found in the polar bear’s ancestor – which has much in common with today’s brown bear.
